In Uttarakhand, two communities are officially recognized as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs): the Raji and the Buksa (also known as Bhoksa). These groups are characterized by small populations, economic marginalization, and limited access to education and healthcare.

Raji (Van Rawats)

Population: 517 (2011 Census)

Location: Primarily found in the Shivalik Hills, especially in the districts of Champawat and Pithoragarh.

Lifestyle: Traditionally nomadic hunter-gatherers, the Raji have faced challenges due to forced settlements and development projects.

Buksa (Bhoksa)

Population: 46,771 (2011 Census)

Location: Concentrated in the Terai-Bhabar region, including districts like Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, and Udham Singh Nagar.

Lifestyle: The Buksa are primarily agrarian, speaking the Buksa language, and are recognized as a Scheduled Tribe in Uttarakhand.
