Overview
The Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Classes 9 and 10 is a Government of India initiative aimed at supporting the education of Scheduled Tribe (ST) students by reducing dropout rates at the secondary level.
Objective
To reduce dropouts during the transition from elementary to secondary education
To enable ST students to progress to post-matric education.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must belong to Scheduled Tribes as recognized in their domicile state/UT.
- Family income should not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh per annum.
- Must be enrolled in recognized institutions.
- Cannot receive any other scholarship simultaneously.
- A valid bank account linked to Aadhaar.
Scholarship Benefits
- Day Scholars: Rs 150/month.
- Hostelers : Rs 350/month.
- Books & Ad hoc Grants: Rs 750 for day scholars & Rs 1,000 for hostelers.
- Disability Allowance: Additional Rs 600–Rs 800/month based on the type of disability
Implementation Process
Applications submitted via state portals or the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
Verification carried out at institute, district, and state levels.
Monitoring & Evaluation
Scholarships are disbursed through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) linked to a dedicated DBT portal ensures transparency and efficient fund transfer.
Regular monitoring by state and central units to prevent misuse of funds.
Role of PMUs
State PMU: Manages state portals, resolves grievances, integrates institutions.
Central PMU: Oversees DBT portal, conducts data analytics, ensures accountability.
